Who is that masked man?

These photos are not from a Halloween party.  They are from Truman Capote’s infamous Black and White Ball at the Plaza Hotel in 1966.  I’d much rather look at these masked revelers than people dressed up as Snooki and The Situation.  Those were the days. Sigh.

My favorite bracelet… I have a copy of the one Truman Capote gave to Jackie Kennedy to wear at one of the Black and White Ball’s… I wear it often. Great pictures!

Honestly I had such an intense reaction of “I wish I had been there!” The clothing, the class, the celebration…. fabulous! Excellent share!

What a chic crew! I would love to host a masquerade ball….brings those glorious ‘cottages’ in Newport to mind for a venue.

I could not agree more, those were the days of Glamming it up. Snooki and reality free!

Wish there was a time transport,
    truly good times for Hollywood.

Fabulous – has to rank up there as one of the most amazing parties of the 2nd half of the century!

What a party. I had forgotten that Mia Farrow was married to Frank. Jackie and Lee plus all of the other A|+ list. How did we get stuck with Snookie and Paris and Lindsay?

You are right. These photos are more interesting and fun than any of today’s costumes. Those really were the days! Elegance, style and independent thinking reigned!

Couldn’t agree more. What happened to classy stars? Been seeing kids here dressed as Snooki and Lindsay Lohan in handcuffs…

Ha! Totally agree – why do people want to look so BAD? Is Halloween the unofficial holiday that lets women feel comfortable revealing their inner low-life selves?? Okay, sorry, no judgement… (Sort of!) Doesn’t Mia Farrow look amazing? I LOVE her hair. LOVE.

    Gorgeous era, supremely-chic people.
Reminds me of the Venetian elegance of this movie I just watched:

Nothing like black and white, all rolled into a masked ball. Cheers, Alcira

    Heather,
Great idea for a Halloween piece.
DO you know that Truman, gave this party for Kathleen Graham? She was a very shy lady…Just taking over the WPost. He wanted to introduce her to NYC and beyond society. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Miss Graham, one luncheon and a dinner. It was at the dinner she told me …(after I just look at her and said, “please, can you tell me what THE ball was like?). She indeed did…All at the table were hanging onto her every word. BTW: Fab photo’s.
    Happy Halloween! ~m.
