Chic in Paris: Au Bain Marie

While I was on the way to meet a very chic New Yorker who also lives in Paris yesterday, I walked by the most amazing looking store. When she mentioned that she still needed china and napkins and other pieces to finish off her home, I told her about the store so we went back together.
Some of you may already know about Au Bain Marie which has been around since 1977 but it was new to me. The owner describes the store as a unique atmosphere where you will find high quality original, unusual, and rare choices which mix the old and contemporary for a refined lifestyle.
It was the dishes in the window and above that caught my eye. They are from a large set of Vieillard Bordeaux service of Big Birds. It was made for an exhibition and is very exceptional. The decoration is raised and some pieces have bronze feet and handles.
In addition to the old and rare pieces, the owner also creates contemporary designs based on them including printed tin plates. They would be perfect for outdoor dining and picnics.
The store is located on rue de l’Universite. The same street on which Julia Child lived, although she called it Roo de Loo. I forgot to ask the owner if she was a patron but after visiting Au Bain Marie, I don’t know how she could not have been one.

I was in Paris two summers ago and stumbled onto this store. I took a photo of it, but did not go inside. The silver items dangling overhead like a fabulous banner caught my eye in your photo. I had to go and get my scrapbook out to make certain that it was the same place. We didn’t go in as the door was locked and you had to press a button for access which put me off. I don’t speak French and it just didn’t seem the type of place to “stroll around in”. So glad you were able to go inside and share photos.
Probably safer for my budget that I live here and not there. What a treasure cheat of treats!

I sought this store out my last trip after seeing a small notice about it in Elle Decor or some magazine. Everything was just AMAZING but the prices were very ‘retail’ and I felt it was more fun to find things at estate sales /flea markets (like your plates you bought at the flea market a few months ago with me!). Walking into this store is like a treasure trove though- so amazing….makes me want a ginormous butler’s pantry!
Amazing! Such gorgeous treasures to be found in this amazing shop! I’ll have to check it out next time in Paris (sans small children!).
Wow…what a dream it would be to have a collection of those items and serve dinner on them. I feel like Lee Radziwill probably shops there! 🙂
