Worst Day of the Year?

by habituallychic

01 . 24 . 08

According to a story on MSNBC, a UK psychologist has calculated that today, January 24th, is the most depressing day of the year. Apparently, it has to do with the cold and dreary weather and holiday debt. I guess the good news is that it can only get better from here!

So, if you are in need of something to cheer you up tonight, you can always head on over to the Elliott Puckette opening at The Paul Kasmin Gallery. Her new work looks to be mostly black and white and she is also experimenting with collage. If that doesn’t work, you could always book a trip to the Caribbean. If anyone has any other ideas to beat the winter blues, let me know!

I was at the show this morning (almost all sold out) and the paintings are beautiful!! The one you have featured here is especially nice, and apparently a bit more like her older work in terms of the density of the line. (At least, that is what a contact at the gallery had to say….I am somewhat new to her work.) The drawings/collages are also lovely, although I do prefer some of her more spare ones from recent years.

    Thanks for the extra cheer!

Hi CB, I just got back from the gallery and dinner. I loved the new work and especially the collages. It was so nice to see them up close. I will say that I miss the dreamy quality of some of her other work but I can see why the show is probably sold out. I love her work.

I love her whimsical work. Thanks for sharing. I needed that winter blues break! 🙂

The best cure against the winter blues for me is lots of fresh flowers! I think my brain is tricked and believe its spring 😉
Thanks for showing this artist! She is new to me but her work is great! Love it!

I love her work, and so attracted to black and white art – lucky you to see it up close!

Katie, The art was great but I need to also book the Caribbean trip. It’s soooo cold in New York today!

M&Co., Great idea about the flowers. I used to buy them all the time but have slacked off lately. I will definitely go out and buy some this weekend and maybe some flowering branches too!

And you should definitely check out more of Elliott’s work. It’s really beautiful!

    Alice, glad I could help!

Mrs. Blandings, it was amazing to see them up close. The lines are so lyrical. It’s amazing how she does them without messing up.

No wonder I feel like crap…I just wrote about this very thing last night.

tents in the closet sound really good right now.

Layers of cashmere and moleskin help. And, since it’s sunny here in Virginia today, a brisk walk to put some colour in the cheeks doesn’t hurt. And don’t forget a dram of whisky tonight in honour of Robbie Burns! Winter has its consolations.

    But so does St. Bart’s…

This is the time of year when I always decide I am officially over winter. It’s so cold in New York right now and I can’t wait for the temperature to rise even a little. I’m tired of bundling up and want to wear all my cute spring clothes!

  15. CB January 25, 2008 | 6:36 pm

I am so with you on the “officially over winter”! I hit that wall at around 11:15 yesterday morning. I even announced this to my husband as I realized it had happened.

I agree that loads of cashmere, a (non-kitchen) fire and a nip or two of some nice scotch eases the pain. But the promise of a warm weather getaway is probably even better. 🙂

Have a lovely weekend and stay warm!!

Cb, Glad I’m not the only one feeling that way! Stay warm!

    shore is purty stuff!

out of curiousity, what does one of ms. puckette’s works go for? i’m thinking a larger work, like the “bachman, 2007” which my be my fave from the selection posted at the gallery’s website.

ps- love her last name “puckette”. is it really her birthname?

  18. Habitually Chic January 25, 2008 | 9:05 pm

Maison21, I honestly didn’t ask the prices because in my case, if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it. Lol.

Her given name is Charlotte Elliott Puckette. She’s from Tennessee. Nuff said.

  19. maison21 January 25, 2008 | 9:25 pm

i wouldn’t have asked either- i was hoping maybe you overheard someone discussing it or sumthin’.

the only time i’ve asked is at the show for those glorious damien hirst butterfly paintngs at the gagosian here. i figured the show was all sold out, so it’s not like they’d ask to see my amex black card first to know if i was seriously interested or anything…

i’m glad her name is real. it’s so old fashioned and kinda charming.

i just looked on my weather widget- at least you have sun to go with your 31 degrees! brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

we are on our 4th day of rain, and it’s so hard to get motivated when it’s dark and gloomy out (it’s one in the afternoon, and i haven’t made it out of the house yet- not even for my much needed starbucks…)
maybe i’ll just have to give up and light a fire and stay the heck in. have lots of work stuff to do, so that wouldn’t be good, though 🙁

Maison21, Next time, I will definitely ask to see the price list. Price be damned!

I plan on going out after to work and getting smashed so then I won’t realize how cold it is! Cheers!

When I did a post on calligraphy, I tried to find a Puckette image like the one you posted. I love the more old fashioned calligraphic quality of it, and the newer work seemed a bit more spare. I am off to check out the gallery online!

  22. About Emily... January 26, 2008 | 11:57 pm

It’s so cold even in Texas!! I’ll settle for looking at some nice art work but the Caribbean wouldn’t be so bad either!
    Love your blog!
