Are they going to start having celebs on every cover?

  2. Marie Louise April 24, 2008 | 1:41 am

Not sure why Julianne Moore would be decorating on a budget. Maybe it’s fun for her to remember what’s it’s like to go out to dinner or buy a lamp. Is that her bedroom? I haven’t gotten my issue in the mail yet – takes awhile by pony express to Connecticut. I definitely need to read the top 10 secrets to a well-run home – unfortunately I don’t think I know a single one of them!

“Budget” is relative. Her “budget” may have been only $50K per room. Is that the master bedroom or her guest bedroom I wonder. I have noticed lately that celeb home profiles are showing the guest room over the master. Maybe the master is not as cute? Or maybe they don’t want to give their stalkers a way to figure out how to break into the bedroom via the pool sliders? (like I keep telling George Clooney, I wasn’t trying to break in, I was measuring for drapes…)

hooray! i actually work for domino, and have just started my own design blog, http://www.urbanfleadesigns.com. Check it out! I’ve linked to your fabulous site, and would LOVE for you to do the same for mine. Keep up the awesome work, and cheers!

Hideous cover!!! aigh! What is going on over at Domino?!? And why is Julianne Moore’s big white FOOT on the cover? And what is she wearing? And since when is she a decorator? And why is she laughing like a maniac? Aigh!!! It baffles the mind.

Also, those drapes look like they came out of a Target box (hello, silk drapes should have lining) as well as the nappy bedspread. Bad news, Domino!

That is a target dresser, no? If they want Target, come on over domino! At least the bird prints are quite nice.

I love Domino but am getting tired of the “stars”. C’mon Domino…you can do it without them!!!!!

BA, I hope not. I don’t really think it’s necessary. Celebs are only on covers when they have a movie to promote and we all know it. We’re not stupid. I like Julianne Moore but she’s on the cover of Bazaar this month too. I’d rather see real designers on the cover. They need to exposure more than Ms. Moore.

Marie Louise, she decorates her stylist’s apartment on a budget using furniture from Ikea and the like. I liked the choice of wall colors but then I saw the Flor carpet tiles on the kitchen floor and was aghast! There is a reason why kitchen’s aren’t carpeted. In a word…cereal! Yuck!

The rest of the magazine was lovely though. I wish they had used another designer on the cover.

Robin, Again, it’s her stylist’s apartment not her own. Her home was featured in Elle Decor a while back. I think she said the budget was $15,000.

Katherine, Thanks! I look forward to checking out your blog!

Anonymous #1, I think we’ve established that Julianne Moore is on the cover to promote a movie. It’s definitely not my favorite redecorating project but Ms. Moore’s style is different from mine.

Perfect Bound, The dresser is from Ikea! The bird prints are Hugo Guinness from John Derian.

Anonymous #2, I was thinking that I certainly would buy Domino without a celebrity on the cover. I wonder if that’s true for the general population.

I wish they would feature more real people and designers on the cover. How about Todd Romano, Albert Hadley, Kelly Wearstler, Victoria Hagen, Vicente Wolf, Thomas O’Brien, Ilse Crawford??? Why do they get to be the magazine but not on it???

It’ll be interesting to see. Her apt was in ED a while back, and then her newer (to her) townhouse in the WV was a cover story for WOI in October(?) 2005, and is glorious in my opinion. She does have good taste when it comes to decor, I’d say… I hope it carries over to budget.

It’s what’s inside that counts, right? I could care less who’s on the cover as long as the content is true to good design.

  17. jonathan April 26, 2008 | 4:16 am

i wonder who she’s talking to on her imaginary phone.

1.) regardless of the type of magazine, celebrity covers consistently lead to higher newsstand sales (this is where magazines can make money; ad sales pay the bills, newsstand sales are the gravy)
2.) garish color combos on covers (and this IS garish) have been proven to be very effective on the newsstand. this is why nearly all magazines have garish colors these days.
3.) what up with the whole “I redid my assistant’s apartment” stories lately? (ivanka trunk too) it reeks of indentured servitude or a relationship that’s crossed some boundaries it shouldn’t. .how about paying your assistant a decent wage and staying the hell out of her private life?
3.) my april issue of domino arrived on april 4. my neighbors arrived on april 2. domino consistently hits my mailbox weeks after it’s on the newsstands. if you’re a domino circulation person reading this comment (or if you’re the editor), please picture me flipping you the bird. and HC, thanks for not spoiling the issue for us who are subscribers. much appreciated!
4.) Urban Flea, even if you do work for domino, it’s really not cool to do the “I linked to your site and now you link to mine thing” strong arm. i swear sometimes blogging is like a really bad version of high school.

  19. Anonymous April 27, 2008 | 5:20 am

I guess employees at Domino are not that smart…Urbanflea is urbanfleadesign.com not urbanfleadesigns.com.

It would help if you linked to the right site. FIRST RULE OF BLOGGING.

I am a little confused, she works for Domino but lives in Chicago? Perhaps she is FREELANCE. I guess she forgot to mention that as well.

I didn’t mind the decorating that JM did — it wasn’t my taste, but it wasn’t as bad as some of the rooms Domino has shown. What I thought was awful about the cover/article, though, was the vest they put on JM. It may be by Yves St Laurent, but it makes her look like a greeter at Wal-Mart.
