For Sale

Who knew a little walk down Madison Avenue Saturday would turn out to be so interesting. First, I saw Fran Lebowitz waiting outside the Carlyle Hotel. Then I noticed presidential interior designer Michael Smith and a friend climbing into a taxi in front of the Ralph Lauren mansion. And while walking by the Stribling Real Estate office, a photo in the window caught my eye. Seems one of our favorite interior designers is selling his apartment. The one bedroom is listed at $885,000 which in my New York skewed sense of pricing actually seems quite reasonable. Those of you who live outside of New York will not find it as such I am sure! More importantly, I’m curious as to where he is moving and when we will be able to see it! Hopefully there will be some magazines left to publish it when it’s ready!

And between 5th and Madison…what’s the catch?

Wishing I had upholstered my chairs in that green. Is that silk shantung? Let us know if there is a moving sale!

Heather, I love this apartment. So much style and personality…and that green chair is to die for! xx

Aha, I have skewed sense of value from Hong Kong too – so that price sounds pretty good to me too!

Reading your days like this, I think my life is sooo boring!! I’d kill to live in NYC!

Price sounds OK to me, but I think it’s probably quite small. That doesn’t matter when it’s so beautifully decorated. Wonderful eclectic and tasteful mix.

Yet another place to buy should I win the lottery LOL. Like you said, I can’t wait to see what he is moving TO -i’m sure it will be even better!

Great style and colors. I think I could move right in.

  8. La Linda May 19, 2009 | 2:14 pm

Yes, beautiful, too bad it won’t look like that when you buy it then it will just be a bare shell (with great bones) and all its warts exposed… 🙁

Thanks Heather for the wonderful post this morning. Mr. Romano has always been one of my favorites. Being a true Jack Russell admirer, I have always had a soft spot for little Bunny and those bed steps! Also, let me thank you for the link to the NYSD. What a terrific interview – and, of course, more photos. I’m with you and can’t wait to see his next place. What a delightful man!

Brilliant Asylum – I know! It seems too perfect! I really wish I was ready to buy today! And I love your chairs in the neutral fabric especially since you have a pair. I think the green is best on an accent chair so perhaps you should start looking for a new one. I also think it’s linen but I could be wrong.

Lisa – I love the green and orange chairs! They are fabulous!

Suzy – I’m glad I’m not the only one! It’s funny how $300 becomes a bargain for shoes too!

The Antiques Diva – I was just telling a friend that I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone famous outside of the design world. I forgot how fun it can be!

Columnist – I don’t see the SF listed but it doesn’t look bad for a one bedroom. I would live there in a heartbeat!

Architect Design – I was thinking that too! I can’t wait to see the new place and what he’ll do different.

    Mary – Me too!

La Linda – you can actually buy it partially furnished and it was fully renovated. I sound like the real estate agent but I don’t think it would be too bad bare.

Anonymous – I saw the bed steps at John Rosselli and they are so perfect for small dogs! I am dying to see the new place. I wonder if it’s ready yet or if we’ll have a long wait. I’ll keep you posted!

Hmm, just a few pennies out of reach! But it’s a beautiful space. I love the color on the wall in the bedroom. I can’t tell if it’s more browny or orangey (those are technical terms!).

Would love to know the green paint color… GORGEOUS apartment.

  16. La Linda May 19, 2009 | 8:40 pm

Partially furnished?! Well, then that’s a damn good price! (not sarcasm) What’s wrong with it? Must have a kitchen the size of a shoebox. LOL
Is it prewar or postwar? It looks like a postwar renovated with prewar details – that would be just fine with me!

Tod Romano is great! Can’t wait to see what he does with his new place. I’ve always loved the antiqued mirrors in the foyer.

The fur throw on the bed made me want to crawl in right away…

  19. KathleenG May 20, 2009 | 6:34 pm

Anyone know the source of the artwork with chocolate brown and white flowers?

  20. Mademoiselle Frou-Frou May 20, 2009 | 11:35 pm

that seems amazingly well-priced for NYC…wow, i wish i could buy it!!

    He is brilliant.

  24. Sascha May 25, 2009 | 8:03 am

yes that is some price tag for a new york city apt, not easy to come by. i’m sure the housing market and the state of the economy are factors. anyhoo, his home is beautiful. I particularly like the antiqued mirror, crown moldings, and his headboard.
