I want to ride my bicycle…

I can’t help but think how cute and chic bicycle riders look in New York and Europe. It makes me want to buy a bike but since I live uptown where the traffic is heavier, I’d probably be flattened by a bus or a cab the minute I took off! I’ll leave the pedaling to others but will continue to admire their ensembles. Just hope their pant legs don’t get caught in the chain!

Wonder how she keeps her hat on!

Love how her dress matches her bike!

Tres chic!

Famke Janssen talks on the phone while cycling!

This girl is beyond chic! Love the wicker basket!

Fashion designer Lela Rose has a custom made tricycle to carry her kids…and dog!

Funny how all the girls wear short dresses while biking!

Only in Italy would a man smoke while riding his bike…and wearing a suit!

Bicycling makes you happy!
The chic pant leg roll to prevent wardrobe a catastrophe!

Even the dog blanket matches his pants!

I wonder if New York will ever initiate a “bicycle transit system” like the Velib in Paris!

Jessica Alba looks chic…and pouty riding a Velib bike in Paris!

If you looking for a chicer bike in Paris, you can stay at Hotel Le Meurice who will provide you with jaunty little ride. Although at their rates, it would be cheaper just to buy your own bicycle!

Even German riders look chic standing next to their bikes!

Of course Blair would have a cute bike!

Sarah Michelle Gellar was even photographed with a cute pink bicycle for Self magazine!

Ellen Page looks very Parisian in her black dress and bike!

If you do decide to buy a bicycle, you want want to make sure it matches your apartment like Chloe Sevigney’s since that is likely where you will have to store it! Oh, and make sure you always wear a helmet! Happy cycling!

Love this post!!!!! Is that Audrey Hepburn in the first photo? The wallpaper in the last photo is amazing.
    Thanks for the pick-me-up.

Hi Mary – the first photo is Audrey Hepburn. I threw that in since it’s one of my favorite photos! The wallpaper in the last photo is Imperial Trellis by Kelly Wearstler. I know people are tired of it but it’s really becoming a classic. Have a great day!

    What a fun post!
I have a tip for short-skirted bicyclists. I’ve found that Spanx will do for bike shorts very nicely!

  4. CashmereLibrarian June 24, 2009 | 3:21 pm

In case I wasn’t clear, I meant to advocate wearing the Spanx UNDER a short skirt–not alone!

Love the concept and of course it’s green as can be BUT I can’t help thinking how dangerous it is to ride a bicycle in San Francisco where I live. And then there’s the whole helmet deal and what it does to your hair. I’ll stick with the Lexus!!

We have a system in DC, similar to the one in Paris. It is awesome. There are stations set up all over the city where you swipe your membership card and take a bike. You can drop it off at any of the other stations. So cool! I ride a bike to work every day, so much faster!

just sitting in my office – and what a perfect sight for a dreary Wednesday afternoon. I love that “the sartorialist” has such a keen eye for finding uber-chic bicycle shots.

    thanks for the smile.

I love to ride my bike, but I’m pretty sure I always just look like I’m working really hard at it. One day I hope to leisurely pedal along looking as chic as any of these photos!

The DC bike system is great, Lauren is right. And with all the park area we have around, it’s so nice to ride downtown.

My bike was stolen! but it was a bit scary in traffic anyway. People who ride in the city are BRAVE!

Can I tell you something? It has always been a dream of mine to use a vintage Schwinn as my main mode of transport. I love bicycles and I used to own one when I lived in Savannah. I loved the exercise and the cool breeze and just riding a bike is so ridiculously fun. But since I live in Atlanta, which is ridiculously car-centric (on par with Los Angeles, I’m told) it isn’t really feasible for me to own a bike, let alone ride one in midtown. I might, however, buy one for decorative purposes:)

Funny you should post this as I bought a Townie bike last summer and have recently started riding to and from work. But downtown Toronto traffic is terrifying. I’m fortunate that I am on bike lanes or trails 75 % of the time but I tense up as soon as I have to merge with cars. I couldn’t even imagine doing it somewhere like New York. Those folks are brave.

if you have the room to store a bike, get one and add good sized baskets on front and sides and then WALK the bike when you need to go to the grocery, etc-
    makes schlepping bags much easier

Beautiful Bikes. I have always admired the relaxed bike cultures of Europe, NYC and CA. I would also be terrified of traffic in the city… but will gladly roam free in the suburbs!

Loved the pictures. It made me smile. I live in a university community where people on bikes make up their own road rules. Scary. But nothing like almost being flattened by a bicycle carrier in Boston. Ran the red light and I swear he was going past the speed limit! I think Holland does bikes right.

If you want to ride your bicycle or well maybe just borrow a free one for the day, this week Topshop new huge clothing shop in soho has free bikes to borrow at any point this week. You can even have your picture taken inside with all kind of fun topshop accessories and it will register you to win one of the 20 bikes they are giving away this week. Hello,

I have just started to bike to work, to bike from my home to the downtown Ottawa(Canada) Byward market and absolutely I love my bike. It is a Townie type of bicycle, with low ride bar (like the old -fashion girl bikes). By the way, I always wear dresses and have no problem whatsoever cycling around. I bike in platform type heels( COACH TRIXY, mine are Grey /gold see link ( in black): http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-COACH-Shoes-Black-4-Wedge-Sandal-Trixy-8M_W0QQitemZ300324545164QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Women_Shoes?hash=item45ecbce28c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1215|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50

I bring heels in my front wire basket so I can change at work and yes, I ALWAYS wear a helmet. If I have to choose between a bad hair day or a concussion…..well, guess which one I would pick? I LOVE MY BIKE!!

All these great pictures make me want a bike for a sweet summer ride…especially the adorable photo of Audrey Hepburn.

I’ve always been really inspired whenever I’ve watched very chic-ly dressed Parisians riding their bicycles everywhere, in their suits, with their flying scarves, going into traffic and riding alongside cars with no fear. Here in L.A., cars will honk their horn at you and threaten to run you over!

  34. Yansy June 26, 2009 | 1:38 am

Thank you for this post. It makes me want to run out and get myself one of those. Loving all the pics.

  35. Amber June 26, 2009 | 6:46 am

Gorgeous images. I have been meaning to get a bike to get around sunny Brisbane, Australia. Somehow it feels less chic with an ugly bike helmet. How I miss the freedom of cycling with the wind in my hair! Thanks for the inspiration, though. love your work.

We have a couple of bicycle places in town that I pass by regularly. There’s a Paul Smith signature bike that had me looking into bikes on the internet. I’ve got a whole folder but have yet to pull the trigger as I walk or drive everywhere. Maybe when the kids are older and they have their bikes. I am worried about the traffic thing though. Do they make good looking helmets? Or is there a law against wearing a riding helmet whilst bicycling?

  37. [Tara] June 26, 2009 | 9:29 pm

These bike photos are all so chic and adorable. Too bad it is 100 degrees here; it kind of takes away from the chic factor 😉

  38. martine June 26, 2009 | 9:44 pm

If you guys like bikes, you should visit Holland once (at least), we are the most avid bik riders, you can cruise all holland on bikes. And I must admit, almost no-one has a cap or helmet. Not even my 5 year olds. They are being watched in traffic and on the cyclist lanes. Which are very common, almost everywhere accept next to a higroad, then ther is a nice broad green land between the cyclist lanes and the high road, you dont want to cycle in fumes… So we don’t really see the point of always wearing a helmet, unless you are cycling further than your town or in parks or nature. And I love it. total freedom!!!

“Even German riders look chic standing next to their bikes!”….

sounds so funny to me …. do you mean we cannot ride a bike?

Have a great weekend and keep riding… and writing..

    greetings

I love this post! I’ve been seriously considering buying a bike recently and these photos are inspiring to look at! I think I’m going to have to practice a bit before I actually hit the bigger roads… I don’t remember the last time I was on a bicycle!
