I forgot to ask owner Stephen Saunders why his store is called The End of History. A more appropriate name would be The End of the Rainbow or maybe Died and Gone to Glassware Heaven! The shop is a treasure trove of vintage glass, ceramics and furniture from the 1950’s and 60’s. Much of the glass and decorative pieces are arranged by color which makes it easy for interior designers to come in and buy an instant collection for their clients. One of their best customers is Steven Gambrel who lives in the area and often stops by on his way home from work. The store is also popular with Jonathan Adler who often buys pieces that he reworks for his own line of pottery. Everything old is new again. I also think that The End of History is going to be the beginning of a very beautiful friendship!

How have I not been here before??? It makes me want to pick a color and random and start collecting! I especially love the pale blue ashtrays in the last photo…if only I smoked…hmmmm. They would still look chic just sitting there, right?

The name was taken from the Francis Fukuyama book “The end of history”.
The book was written just after the Berlin wall fell and his theory in a nutshell was that the end of the cold war would lead to a world of liberal democracy, free trade and peace. Well not quite but……….
I took the name for two reasons, the first one was the time of our opening in 1997, just before the millenium and the second was that my shop represents a period when import meant from Europe not China. There was a time when all the American department stores were filled with treasures from Italy, Denmark and Sweden and the American dollar was king! As fast as they could blow the glass in Murano it was shipped to importers in New York. Now we have Italian clients and ship to Milan!

I am in rainbow heaven. Such a timely piece for me, on Sunday I was dragging out pieces of Blenko & R. Bitossi from storage, & wising I had more. Only wish I were in NYC. Thank you for the intro to this fab store!
I love The End of History! I can totally see the connection to Jonathan Adler. Just bought a JA lamp for our nursery that is similar to the vintage pale blue one in one of your photos. Also – love VM Glasshouse (online). Have not ordered from them but fantastic glass collection.
The colors!!!!!! Especially the cased pieces. The breadth of the collection is amazing.

Ooooh, this is a new one for us as well, and we’re in love! It looks like lots of vintage Blenko, Raymor, along with other Italian and Scandinavian pieces, each and every one of them drool-worthy!

Do you know anything about the ceramics featured in the 3rd last image? The blue figures and vases lood so familiar, but I can’t quite remember the maker. Any clues?
I love this store. I’ve gone often (more often to browse rather than buy) and they have the most beautiful collection of objects I have ever seen. When people come to visit me in New York, I sometimes take them to The End of History as part of the NY tour! I’m glad you featured this store on your blog.
