Oscar Wrap Up

Last year, I think I went to bed before the Oscars were even over but this year I stayed up to the bitter end to catch all the highlights. It was a pretty disappointing red carpet with not many contenders for best dressed but my vote goes to Cameron Diaz who looked amazing in Oscar de la Renta! The biggest red carpet blunder was letting Kathy Ireland interview the stars for ABC. I think we can all agree that she should never be allowed to do that again. I’m also not sure that two hosts worked so I vote for Tina Fey as hostess for next year’s show. They can also cut out the modern dance numbers and bring back the best song performers. But that’s just my two cents. What did you think?

Demi Moore in Versace Atelier looked lovely and was the only one to navigate the stair gracefully. They should also get rid of the stairs. There is nothing better than seeing the ladies glide across the stage like Ginger Rogers.

Sandra Bullock’s gold Marchesa gown matched the gold Oscar that she won for Best Actress later in the evening.

Julianne Moore didn’t walk the red carpet but her Calvin Klein was one of the most beautiful dresses of the evening. I also liked that her hair is a little more looser than Sandra’s.

I liked Sarah Jessica Parker’s Chanel Haute Couture dress but the hair was a little too big. I didn’t mind the look which was channeling Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair but the front should have been smoother.

Kate Winslet can do no wrong and looked beautiful in YSL but I’d love to see her in some other designers.

Katherine Bigelow was the belle of the ball last night and won for Best Director and Best Film.

Every older woman should look to Helen Mirren for advice on how to dress age appropriately. I thought she looked beyond beautiful in Badgley Mischka.

I liked Elizabeth Banks in Versace but thought her hair could have been a little bigger to balance out the ruffles of the dress.

A lot of people loved Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab but I’m a little on the fence about this one.

Oprah Winfrey looked amazing in Carolina Herrera and her hair was perfection.

Gabourey Sidibe was beautiful in blue Marchesa. All the ladies of Precious wore blue as a nod to Hattie McDaniel who wore blue when she won her Oscar in 1940.

Mo’Nique was also beautiful in blue and added the Gardenia as another nod to Hattie McDaniel but a lot of people wished she had left it off. Since she’s an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress, I think she’s allowed do whatever she wants!

Jeff Bridges was the big winner for Best Actor but his wife, Susan Geston, was the winner of best jewelry for the stunning turquoise earrings and bracelet!

Colin Firth didn’t win but he still looks dapper in his bespoke Tom Ford suit and his wife, Livia Giuggioli, looked lovely too!

And last but not least, Tom Ford wearing Tom Ford gets my vote for best dressed man. Although, Sam Worthington was a close second. I couldn’t find a photo of him but those glasses made me swoon. Sam, if you tire of your girlfriend, call me!

I so agree with you about Kathy Ireland. We had been watching the E-News Red Carpet show and switched to ABC and we were appalled by the interviewers. All the women were awful, the guy would have passed with a C grade, but Ireland was a robot and so scripted without any spontaneity or humor…she needs to be fired! This should have been a heads up about the quality of the upcoming Oscar show and it was so disappointingly boring. How can they make Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin sound tired? Ricky Gervaise in the Golden Globes was terrific because they let him ride and do his own thing. That is now my favorite award show, since I really like seeing the stars mingling during the dinner. In the end, I predicted all the big winners, so no surprises there, but it is all about the fashion and in that sense I was not disappointed.

I wasn’t able to catch the Oscars, so thank you for posting the women in their dresses! I can see that neutrals really will be big for spring (which is fine with me!). I think they all look beautiful- and I agree with your pick for the Oscar de la Rentra dress worn by Cameron Diaz.

This had to be the blahhest Oscars ever 😛 The only highlights for me were Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actess. They weren’t surprise wins, they just pleased me immensely. But the dresses lacked color and the speeches were awful. One of the fashion highlights for me was presenter Amanda Seyfried’s lovely gown. I didn’t catch the designer but she blew Miley out of the water 🙂 I think Tina Fey would be a FABULOUS choice. So ladies… Let’s Hear It For The Girls!!!

Thanks for posting all the dresses. You absolutely picked the best ones. I have to say that Demi is my #1 and Cameron is my #2 though. Did you notice the woman who won for best costuming? She looked amazing and really wore her dress as opposed to letting the dress wear her. She owned it.
I don’t think having two hosts works. I wish it had only been Alec. It seemed stiff as if they were not wanting to step on one another’s lines. Thank goodness for Twitter or it would have been much more boring!

Oprah looked FABULOUS!! Completely agree. And Tom Ford… oh, Tom Ford… so many of the men looked great last night.

Demi and Elizabeth Banks were my faves – with Cameron in second and Kristen Stewart in third (even though I loathe her).

    Enjoyed your Twittering!

    Cheers,
    Alaina

StacyStyle: YES! I loved the winner of best costume design!! I tried finding a photo of her but could not… her red hair and the print of her dress was beyond beautiful.

Cameron was my favorite too. Hands down. Crazy about those sparkles! XO

kathy ireland was such a blunder i was emabarresed to watch her!
agree with you son so many points above..LOVe colin firths wife clutch! she’s a beauty!
And get on my side of the fence with rachel mcadams..pulled off a print!beautiful!

Meryl Streep was a class act as usual. Such a beautiful, talented lady. I loved Julie and Julia, but thought Sandra Bullock was the winner. She looked absolutely beautiful.
Cameron Diaz can do no wrong. She is beautiful and classy!
Colin Firth. Gorgeous. He would look good in rags.
Racheal McAdams is so beautiful, so she pulled it off. That dress would have looked bad on most.
Kate Winslet is the winner in my book. She is just class all over.
The show was the worst I have seen, so it is fortunate that the stars looked beautiful!

I loved Sandy Powell’s whole ensemble. She was so stylish and elegant 🙂

  11. splendidmarket.com March 8, 2010 | 4:35 pm

SJP looked wonderful, that was my favorite dress. What a shame Katherine Bigelows dress was so ill fitting, while she was giving the speech I couldn’t stop looking at the mini bodice and her mid section and thinking of how unflattering it was.
Oh! The modern dance number, painful!

Hi – you did a wonderful job covering the fashions at last night’s Oscars. I didn’t get a chance to watch it but heard that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were fantastic. I agree with you about Helin Mirren – what a lady!!

  13. Brittany Simmons March 8, 2010 | 5:30 pm

I am one who loved Rachel McAdams’ dress. I just liked the combination of colors (gold and blue) and I love the top part of it. The bottom part is slightly too billowy but she is beautiful! -Brittany at Loveofinteriors.blogspot.com

I agree on most of the dresses.. I thought Helen Mirin and Meryl Streep were so stunning and classy! They looked effortless and so confident. I was unsure about Cameron Diaz.. the dress is gorgeous no doubt..guess I an not used to her looking so glam..I like her hair shorter… and..more casual chic ensembles if that makes sense..I felt like she was trying to hard.. my 2 cents… Red lipstick..?? is that going to be the look this spring/summer…a little too much for me.. I am pale shade of pink or nude with some gloss/shine kinda gal!

  15. For Every Bird a Nest March 8, 2010 | 6:49 pm

Another gorgeous dress was surprisingly Miley Cyrus. She captured a youthful look while taking up the sophistication a few notches.
Kathy Ireland needs to go. That was terrible!! I agree that the red carpet was pretty blah this year. Normally we see someone truly step out of the box and nail it, but not this year. People played it very safe, and if not, they completely missed the mark. Another complaint, gum should be outlawed on the red carpet. Did you see a few of the ladies (SJP) chomping away!?! Took away from the entire look

  16. Jeffrey March 8, 2010 | 8:03 pm

Wow! I agree with you on every point. I would just add that:
    – I didn’t like the fact that they are saying “the winner is” again, as art is not a competitive sport.
    – Meryl Streep, win or not everyone knows she’s the best and then years from now her performance is the one people will still remember and also so glad that for once she’s not going to be in anyone’s worst dressed list (I thought she looked great).

  17. Jeffrey March 8, 2010 | 8:06 pm

Oh, and another point, who was that woman who interrupted the Best Short Documentary(?) winner’s speech and why wasn’t she kicked off stage? That was his moment and she ruined it.

  18. Jodi March 8, 2010 | 10:58 pm

For Every Bird A Nest: Thank you for mentioning the gum!!! Reminds me that these people are just “actors”.

ABC – the worst most unprofessional cast EVER. I had to mute Kathy Ireland in order to watch the prelim., painful.

What a great re-cap. I love your perspective, this is one of my favorite re-caps for sure. You are so real and honest!

I was also on the fence about Rachel McAdams dress, I didn’t really find it appropriate for the caliber of this event.

Love that you included Colin Firth and his wife, what a striking couple they are! And how can anyone NOT love Tom Ford wearing his own…that was pretty amazing seeing him up there on stage. He couldn’t have had a better partner in SJP either…thank goodness they had him go out with her!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts today!

  20. nicolefalack@gmail.com March 9, 2010 | 12:50 am

I agree on a lot… I LOVED Rachel McAdams. I LOVED Jeff Bridges & his wife. Really loved them.

I am sick of seeing gray, silver, pewter, nude and champagne. On the wrong skin tone it can make these women look washed out!

  21. A Gift Wrapped Life March 9, 2010 | 1:42 am

So glad you did this recap as I feel asleep at mid point. Though I do remember painfully looking away when Kathy Ireland was interviewing (she did look good) but SJP…..loved the hair (on her) but for someone who can carry just about any look, this dress didn’t do her any favours. It was alright, just not as magnificant as she normally looks. Fun post.

  22. Jana Marie March 9, 2010 | 2:20 am

I would also agree that Kathy Ireland should never be allowed to interview again. I feel like she made everybody feel so awkward! haha

  23. ForfeitReality March 9, 2010 | 4:15 am

I looove Demi Moore’s dress, but SJP did not look good last night – too much tanner, and the dress was shapeless.

The reason I actually even watched the Oscars last night was because I knew LXD was going to be dancing – and they were awesome!

  24. Jaime March 9, 2010 | 2:48 pm

The men in Tom Ford- Tom himself and Ryan Reynolds- get my mens vote!

SJP, Diane Kruger, Meryl, and Sandra get my womens vote….oh Miley too (though it pains me to say it!).

  25. Denise Fasanello March 10, 2010 | 4:01 pm

Great post! The best wrap up I’ve read so far!

  26. plaisirs simples March 11, 2010 | 4:07 am

    LOVED SJPs get up!
