Fall Favorite: Apple Crisp

One of my favorite things about fall besides cozy rooms and beautiful folliage is apple season.  I don’t think I’ve ever met an apple dessert that I didn’t like and this family recipe for apple crisp is my all time favorite.  I have a feeling that once you try it, it will be your favorite too!
Apple Crisp
4 cups sliced tart apples (about 4 medium – I use Granny Smith)
2/3 to 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats (I use 3/4 cup)
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup butter softened
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange sliced apples in greased 8″ x 8″ square pan.  Mix dry ingredients and then add softened butter to create topping.  Sprinkle evenly over apples.  Bake for 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender.  Serve warm with ice cream.

Grant – Is the thought of me cooking surprising??? I love to cook but usually don’t blog about it. And yes there are oats in the topping.

Delicious!! My parents owned an apple orchard when I was in highschool. That created autumn memories for me that I will never forget. The fresh cider. The smell of apples everywhere, in our car, in our house. Apples forevermore are emblazoned in my heart right alongside Autumn xo

Ok, so I made this last night…and LOVED it! So easy! I had to improvise though, no oats, so………I used one package of instant oatmeal (brown sugar & cinnamon). No one could tell the difference! Delicious! Especially with a scoop of Blue Bell homemde vanilla ice cream! Thanks for the recipe!!!

    Happy Fall!!!

Your apple crisp looks too yummy and is making my mouth water – maybe it should become a breakfast food… And everything tastes better when made from scratch – however, if you don’t have time to pull the ingredients together and measure them out, I tried the Apple Crisp topping from Concord Foods (on sale for $1!)where the only thing you need is a stick of (very good) butter and voila! But you still have to slice the apples!

A Pittsburgh favorite 🙂 My mom would make this every fall and freeze them as we had 2 enormous apple trees in our backyard. We had apple crisp every week!

    Dear Heather,

I made it and already it is GONE!!! Made a great breakfast dish, sans the ice cream but was great with it when warm from the oven!!! Thank you for sharing with us…
