Fashionable Film: L’Avventura

As we all know, April showers bring May flowers.  They also bring a great opportunity to stay in and watch movies.  I’ve been watch a lot of French films to practice for Paris but I recently added the classic Italian picture L’Avventura to the mix. It was the photo above of a very chic Monica Vitti that peaked my interest and led me to the 1960 film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. It’s been referred to Hitchcock-esque and it does involve the disappearance of one of the characters but it’s not the story that interested me. First, the camera loves Monica Vitti.  It’s no wonder that she and the director ended up becoming a couple. Second, I found the fashions while simple and only seen in black and white, very inspiring.  Of course, everything from the 1960’s looks good to me today but I especially loved the preppy looks they wear in the beginning of the film including the shoes that look like a cross between espadrilles and Toms. It’s not my favorite old foreign film but it’s definitely worth checking out on the next rainy day.

I love the French, but for me the Italian lifestyle always wins — still chic but always more relatable! This film looks amazing.

Even though its in Black and white you can really sense the colours. Serious true beauty in these women.

The fashion is amazing in that film…so chic and fabulous in a way only the Italians can manage. Love it!
