I think my fascination with European chateaux and castles is due to the fact that we just don’t have that type of history here in the United States. If you share my obsession, you should definitely pick up T Magazine 2018 Design Issue in The New York Times on Sunday, March 25th to ogle Schloss Hollenegg in Austria. Parts of 52 room castle date back to the 12th-century and didn’t even have internal staircases until Alfred Liechtenstein and his wife Alice made it more family friendly. While there are many unused rooms, the main public areas now serve as a beautiful backdrop to art and design exhibitions through Schloss Hollenegg for Design. You can only tour the castle with its many 18th-century chinoiserie wallpapered rooms once a year. This year that is scheduled for May 4-7. Definitely book your trip now.
