There are many people who declare themselves an interior designer with no education or even experience but this is not the case with Alice Engel, the interior design director for Peter Pennoyer Architects. The Manhattan born and bred Engel has an A.B. in History of Art and Architecture from Harvard and a Masters in Textile Design from Rhode Island School of Design. If that’s not impressive, I don’t know what is other than the room she helped to design for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House this year.

“We imagined this as a really fun guest room for a Parisian houseguest,” said Engel, a houseguest for whom they even had custom stationery created to sit on the desk. The firm thought the Schumacher Le Castellet patterned fabric on the walls and windows was a very traditional element so they added the citron fabric to add a pop of color and a modern twist. The canopy bed also clad in Schumacher fabrics and dressed in custom linens from Leontine Linens is the chic focal point of the room while the Tug Rice illustrations add wit and whimsy and keep it from looking too stuffy. A perfect combination.

On a side note, I’ve mixed photos of the room that I took on a grey day with a few professional photos. They show why you should always turn off lamps before you photograph interiors.

The Kips Bay Decorator Show House runs from May 2-30, 2019 and tickets can be purchased online. Admission is $40 and includes the journal and benefits the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
