Working Girl: How to Dress for the Office without Sweating in the Heat or Freezing in the AC
by habituallychic
06 . 20 . 24I had a reader request for outfits to wear to the office when it’s hot outside but freezing inside because of the air conditioning. I thought this was a perfect fashion conundrum to answer with the help of Net-a-Porter who have the perfect wardrobe staples for work. And while it’s the first day of summer, I also chose these pieces with an eye to fall since it can stay warm through October so they will have longevity in your wardrobe.
You can’t go wrong with linen in the summer so I’d start with this sand colored double-breasted wool, silk and linen-blend blazer with matching pleated straight-leg pants. You can walk to work in the sleeveless vest and add the blazer when you get to the office.
For the work day, I’d pair it with cream cutout leather and suede slingback pumps since some offices frown on sandals and the medium brown suede tote that will hold all your office files and laptop.
For drinks after work, I’d swap out the closed toe shoes for some fun red leather slingback sandals and a brown suede-trimmed croc-effect leather clutch.
With both outfits, I suggest simple gold vermeil knot earrings, a bold gold-tone necklace, and chic gold-tone square-frame sunglasses.
I chose this outfit with my friend Stephanie Herdrich who is the Associate Curator of American Painting and Drawing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The ivory paneled topstitched denim midi dress is also perfect for walking to work in hot weather but she can throw on the matching cropped topstitched cotton-blend canvas jacket for a meeting.
The cutout snakeprint slingback pumps are a great walkable height while the green large leather tote will have her ahead of the green bag trend for fall.
The gold-tone flower crystal earrings add a softer touch to the outlines of the dress. Omg! Stephanie just messaged me to day that she just bought these earrings on Monday! I love when I virtual styling is on point!
I’d also add the gold-tone banana cuff as a nod to surrealism and finish the outfit off with oval-frame tortoiseshell acetate sunglasses.
For my friends who work in design, I love this blue linen-twill blazer and matching pleated herringbone linen shorts which I would pair with a ruffled polka-dot silk-twill blouse. It looks like a fabric scheme for a room.
You can get away with shorts in creative fields if you keep them professional and pair them with a low shoe like these embellished leather kitten heel slingbacks.
The red brown leather shoulder bag would add a lovely contrasting color and the leather-trimmed woven linen-blend belt would add some texture.
To finish off the look, I’d suggest the fashion forward Khaite gold-tone earrings and oversized aviator-style tortoiseshell recycled-acetate and gold-tone sunglasses that pick up the color of the bag.
Another suit option is this cream double-breasted linen blazer you could wear early in the week with the matching pleated wide-leg linen pants and on Summer Fridays with the pleated linen shorts.
I’d add a pop of color with the knitted tank and suede-trimmed croc-effect leather mules.
The accessories I would pair are the snake-effect leather belt to add a little pattern and interest, along with the simple neutral woven clutch, 18-karat gold diamond necklace, 18-karat gold diamond hoop earrings, and rectangular-frame tortoiseshell acetate sunglasses.
For those who work at home but may also need to go out to pick up the kids or run errands, this green embroidered silk-twill shirt would look super chic with the sleeves rolled paired with either the matching embroidered silk-twill wide-leg pants or embroidered silk-twill shorts depending on your preference.
I’d keep things simple with the off-white Loewe Puzzle Fold leather clutch but add some pizzazz with the burgundy bow-embellished woven leather ballet flats
I think it’s important to wear jewelry like these crochet gold-tone hoop earrings which pick up on the woven texture of the shoes and the gold-plated bracelet that also has a woven feel.
Don’t forget to grab the chic aviator-style two-tone titanium sunglasses on your way out the door.
Hope this helps you stay cool while looking chic and pulled together this summer!
XOXO,
HC
